Kevin Jones will be joining Coastal as the Boys 18’s head coach for 2008-09, and will aid in the development of the boys juniors program from the youngest ages on up. Kevin has been coaching boys and girls volleyball at the NCAA Division I level as well as Junior’s and High School for over ten years. Collegiately, from 1999 to 2003, Kevin was an assistant coach for the University of Arizona women’s volleyball program, which he helped lead to NCAA Division I Sweet Sixteen, Elite Eight and Final four appearances in consecutive years. He also instructed many All-American and All Pac-10 players including Kim Glass, Dana Burkholder and Lisa Rutledge. While in Arizona, Kevin also developed the Club Cactus Juniors boys’ volleyball program. No Tucson area boys team had ever been to Junior Nationals, and in two years, Kevin led the boys 18’s to a 3rd place finish in the 18-Open Division. It was the highest finish ever for a non perennial powerhouse (usually from California or Puerto Rico). He followed it up by taking an almost entirely different team (just two returners) to Top 5 in the nation the following year. Among 4 All-Americans he developed between the two years was Tyler Hildebrand, four-time All-American at Long Beach State University. Before knee problems, Tyler was projected to take the reins as the USA National Team setter. Many other of his players both in boys and girls juniors have gone on to start at top Division I schools, including 2001 Gatorade National High School Player of the year Bre Ladd (University of Arizona) and local Virginia Beach standout and All-East Coast outside hitter, Josh Walker (University of Hawaii). Kevin also coached at Wichita State University where he helped the women’s team develop into what is now a national power. This fall they are ranked top 15 in the nation. Recently, Kevin led the Virginia Beach boys 18’s to the only East Coast Championship Gold Medal in Tidewater Area history. Kevin played volleyball at University of Arizona and was a 3 time NIRSA All-American, as well as playing for the USA 19 and under Junior National team as starting Libero and No. 3 outside. Kevin is marrying Jody Lindstrom this fall and resides in Virginia Beach. |
